Every Day Is Public Transportation Day — But Today, the World Celebrates Together
Every day, billions of people step onto a bus, board a train, or swipe through a subway turnstile. They don't always think about it. But they should, because public transportation might just be one of the most powerful forces for good in our modern world.
Today, on World Public Transport Day, we join transit advocates everywhere in celebrating what we at Optibus believe is the backbone of sustainable, equitable, and livable communities.
Public transit is better for our planet. According to the European Environmental Agency, buses are twice as energy-efficient as cars, and rail is four times more efficient. Choosing public transport is the right step for great climate decisions.
It's also safer. In the USA, passengers board public transportation 34 million times every single weekday. And traveling by public transit is 10 times safer per mile than traveling by car. Ten times.
It connects people to opportunity. More-frequent buses could expand the number of jobs accessible within 30 minutes by nearly 30,000, a 60% increase. Priority bus lanes could push that figure even higher, unlocking access to more than 40,000 additional jobs for the average resident.
It creates and supports jobs, too. Every $1 billion invested in public transportation supports approximately 50,000 jobs. And for every $1 invested, $5 comes back in economic returns.
Public transport connects people to jobs, students to classrooms, and friends to each other. But making it run efficiently, navigating driver shortages, transitioning fleets to electric, optimizing thousands of routes in real time, that's genuinely complex work.
That's exactly what we think about every day at Optibus. We're proud to empower operators and agencies in 7,000 cities across 35 countries with the technology and tools they need to make public transit the mobility mode of choice, for everyone, everywhere.
Because when we invest in public transportation, we're not just investing in infrastructure. We're investing in ourselves, in the environment, in the economy, and in the kind of future we want to live in.
Happy World Public Transportation Day. Let's keep our cities moving.
