Every few decades, the way we interact with technology undergoes a fundamental shift. We moved from command lines to graphical user interfaces, and then to mobile screens. Today, generative AI is driving the next major evolution. It is changing not just how software is built, but how we, as humans, instruct computers to solve our most complex problems.
At Optibus, we have been thinking deeply about this shift.
For years, our transportation management software has relied on sophisticated mathematical modeling, optimization algorithms, and machine learning—what some might now call "classical AI." These engines are incredibly powerful. They solve highly complex, multi-variable public transportation puzzles in seconds, helping cities schedule buses, optimize routes, and manage fleets more efficiently.
But as powerful as these optimization engines are, users still have to interact with them through a traditional software interface. They have to click the right buttons, navigate nested menus, and manually translate their real-world ideas into the specific parameters of a software system.
With the launch of the Optibus Agent, we are changing this dynamic.
The Optibus Agent is an AI assistant built directly into our transit planning platform. It represents a shift from static software to "agentic" software—systems that can understand intent, execute multi-step workflows, and collaborate with the user in natural language.
Instead of navigating the platform to find a specific setting or run a manual scenario, a transit planner can simply explain what they want to achieve. The Agent acts as an interactive partner: navigating the interface, pulling the relevant configurations, and preparing the groundwork for review. The planner is always in the driver's seat, validating, fine-tuning, and approving every plan.
Transit planners are highly skilled professionals. They understand their cities, their passengers, and the delicate balance of creating efficient networks. Yet, in modern transit planning, a significant amount of time is spent on what I call "software bureaucracy"—the friction of learning complex interfaces, repeating manual data entry, and navigating system constraints just to get an idea onto the screen.
Our goal with the Optibus Agent is to eliminate this friction.
By handling the mechanical steps of the planning process, the Agent allows planners to focus entirely on their domain expertise. You don't need to be a software power-user to get the best out of Optibus; you just need to be a great transit planner. Your ideas can go from a concept in your mind to a concrete, optimized plan in a fraction of the time, without the system getting in your way.
We are incredibly proud to launch this first version of the Optibus Agent. It is a major step forward for our platform and our industry, but from an engineering perspective, it is only the foundation.
Our plans for the Agent are ambitious. We are built to iterate rapidly, and we will be rolling out continuous improvements to make the Agent more capable, more contextual, and even more deeply integrated into your daily workflows.
We built Optibus to make public transportation smarter and more resilient. By changing how planners interact with our technology, we are giving them the ultimate tool to focus on what truly matters: keeping our cities moving.
