One thousand cities have joined the Optibus city network in less than two quarters.
Optibus is excited to announce that usage of its software for planning and operating more sustainable and efficient public transportation has grown to 5,000 cities! The milestone comes with Optibus’ adoption in Manaus, Brazil, where Sinetram will use Optibus to plan the first artificial intelligence public transportation network in the Amazonas region.
Manaus, the capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas, is home to just over two million residents - nearly half of the state’s population. In 2021, the city instituted a Smart Cities Plan spanning infrastructure, green building, digitalization, innovation, sustainability, inclusion, and mobility. Now, as part of that transformation, Manaus’ public transportation system will be 100% managed using Optibus’ software in order to improve service efficiency. With this decision, Manaus will serve as a reference for how artificial intelligence and optimization algorithms can enable sustainable mobility and development across the state of Amazonas.
Located in northern Brazil bordering Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela, Amazonas is a vast, sprawling state whose territory surpasses that of the entire country of Mongolia. This area is almost completely covered by the Amazon, the world's largest tropical rainforest and representative of over half of the planet's remaining rainforest.
Despite the important role of the Amazon in protecting biodiversity and fighting climate change, seventeen percent of this rainforest has been destroyed due to human activity. To fulfill their pledge to end deforestation of the Amazon by the end of this decade and promote sustainable development in the rainforest region, Brazil is rolling out artificial intelligence and new technologies across the state to ensure that development does not endanger the environment.
The implementation of Optibus in Manaus falls into this larger movement to enable sustainable human development in the Amazonas. Using artificial intelligence and optimization algorithms, cities and operators can more easily plan efficient and reliable public transportation that people will choose over private vehicles. The result is less road infrastructure and vehicle emissions that negatively impact the environment.
Optibus’ 5,000 cities milestone means that the company’s software has been implemented in an additional 1,000 cities around the world in the last five months, since Melbourne, Australia, was announced as Optibus’ 4,000th city. That represents 25% growth in less than two quarters and 400% growth over the last two years, since Santiago was named as the 1,000th city in February 2022. Optibus is proud to help cities large and small to design more efficient and sustainable public transportation infrastructure, and we can’t wait to continue our expansion to more cities worldwide.
