### ***The partnership brings MagicEye, Optibus's AI driver safety system, to UK bus and coach fleets as fatigue and distraction prevention becomes a requirement for new London buses from 2027***

[Optibus](http://www.optibus.com/), the leading AI-powered platform for end-to-end public transportation planning and real-time operations, today announced a partnership with [Elite Vehicle Supplies](https://www.elitevehiclesupplies.com/), the UK specialist in bus and coach safety and driver systems. Together, the companies will bring MagicEye, Optibus's AI-powered driver fatigue and distraction monitoring system, to UK operators, with Elite providing vehicle integration, installation and nationwide after-market support.

The partnership comes as Transport for London (TfL) makes driver fatigue and distraction prevention mandatory for all new buses entering its fleet from 2027, under the second phase of its Bus Safety Standard (BSS).

Optibus and Elite will show MagicEye live at Euro Bus Expo, 3–5 November 2026 at the NEC Birmingham.

## **The Bus Safety Standard's next chapter: from safer vehicles to safer drivers**

TfL launched its Bus Safety Standard in 2018, setting requirements for buses entering the London fleet in 2019, 2021 and 2024. The first phase focused on the vehicle itself, from Advanced Emergency Braking to redesigned bus fronts that better protect people walking and cycling. It has delivered: casualty numbers on Bus Safety Standard routes fell by approximately 41% over the period analysed, compared with around 22% on control routes.

Bus Safety Standard 2, published in June 2026, turns the focus to the driver's cab. For the first time, new buses entering service from 2027 must carry systems that detect the signs of fatigue and distraction and act on them:

- **Driver alerts:** haptic and audible warnings in the cab when fatigue indicators are detected
- **Management alerts:** details of each alert sent to the operator's control team in near real time
- **Fleet-level data:** a dashboard showing trends by route, time of day and shift pattern

TfL is going further than national regulation, requiring fatigue detection to activate from 5 kph rather than 20 kph so that systems work in the slow, stop-start traffic where urban risk is concentrated. The same standard will also require seatbelts for bus drivers from 2027 – fitting them is not currently a legal requirement.

These measures support London's Vision Zero target that no one is killed on, or by, a bus by 2030.

## **Why fatigue and distraction are now in focus**

In 2025, 10 people were killed in [collisions](https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/media/press-releases/2026/may/london-road-deaths-down-again-in-2025-but-more-work-to-do-to-reduce-road-danger-says-tfl) involving a London bus and [28,368 bus crashes were recorded in London](https://www.mylondon.news/news/transport/angry-exhausted-ignored-inside-story-34720166) - equivalent to every bus in London crashing more than three times over the 12 month period.

Elements like driver fatigue and distraction contribute to the issue. A [Unite survey of 2,000 London bus drivers](https://www.unitetheunion.org/news-events/news/2026/april/london-bus-driver-fatigue-putting-drivers-and-public-at-risk) found that 60% of drivers experience sleepiness while driving. Almost half (48%) had a 'close call' due to fatigue in the past 12 months.

Distraction is a separate risk with different causes, from mobile phones to in-cab screens and alerts competing for a driver's attention. TfL's standard addresses both, aligning with EU requirements for Advanced Driver Distraction Warning systems.

## **How MagicEye works**

[MagicEye](https://optibus.com/product/magic-eye/), part of Optibus Control, uses an in-cab AI camera to detect signs of drowsiness, distraction and fatigue. It then:

- **Alerts the driver in the moment**, giving them the chance to refocus before a lapse becomes a collision
- **Notifies the operator's control team** so a controller can check in and confirm the driver is fit to continue
- **Builds a fleet-wide picture** of when and where risk occurs, so operators can address root causes such as shift patterns, rather than individual incidents alone

MagicEye meets every BSS 2 fatigue and distraction requirement, including 5 kph activation and fleet dashboard access for TfL.

Operators can start with MagicEye in shadow mode: for around three months, MagicEye records fatigue and distraction events without alerting drivers, building a baseline for the fleet. Once alerts are switched on, operators can measure the drop in risk events against that baseline, giving them clear before-and-after evidence of impact.

MagicEye is proven at scale. In Mexico City, Metrobus equipped 792 buses – more than 90% of its fleet – and recorded an 81% reduction in risk events, including microsleep and mobile phone use.

## **A single route from specification to support**

The partnership combines two complementary strengths:

- **Optibus** provides the MagicEye technology, AI and software development, analytics, event verification and continued product innovation
- **Elite** brings established relationships with operators, bus manufacturers and transport authorities, along with vehicle integration, commissioning, training and after-market support across the UK

For operators, that means one joined-up path from evaluation and specification through fitment and long-term support – whether MagicEye is installed at build on new vehicles or retrofitted to existing buses as operators bring their wider fleets up to the same standard.

"Bus Safety Standard 2 puts the driver at the heart of bus safety, and that's exactly where technology should be focused," said **Amos Haggiag, CEO and co-founder of Optibus.** "Bus drivers do one of the most demanding jobs on the road. MagicEye gives them a safety net, and gives operators real-time insights to fix the causes of fatigue. With Elite's reach across UK operators and manufacturers, MagicEye can get into the cab quickly and protect passengers and drivers for the life of the vehicle."

“We are delighted to announce our partnership with Optibus, bringing their market-leading MagicEye driver fatigue solution to our customers. Backed by an exceptional team and proven technology, this partnership represents an exciting step forward for Elite,” said **Scott Forman, Managing Director of Elite Vehicle Supplies. “**With new regulations set to make driver fatigue monitoring mandatory across London transport from 2027, Elite and Optibus are perfectly positioned to support our existing customers in meeting these requirements. More importantly, this partnership is about making our roads safer, helping operators reduce accidents, protect drivers and passengers, and ultimately save lives.”

## **What does the partnership mean for UK buses?**

**For drivers**

- Real-time alerts that support safer driving, particularly late in long shifts and in heavy traffic
- Data that enables supportive conversations about fatigue and its root causes

**For operators**

- A clear, supported path to meeting TfL's 2027 fatigue and distraction requirement
- One partner for supply, installation, training and after-market service
- Fleet-level insight into fatigue patterns by route, time of day and shift

**For passengers and other road users**

- Fewer opportunities for a tired or distracted moment to turn into a collision

## **The bigger picture**

London's standard is becoming a national reference point. Many first-phase Bus Safety Standard measures are now standard features on new vehicles beyond the capital, including in Manchester and Northern Ireland, and have been adopted as far afield as Hong Kong and Singapore. The Bus Services Act 2025 now gives local authorities across England the power to specify safety measures in franchising contracts and Enhanced Partnership agreements – the same mechanism London uses to set its standard. The UK Government's road safety strategy, published in January 2026, also targets a 65% reduction in people killed or seriously injured on the roads by 2035.
